These beautiful birds were shy when it came to having their photos taken. It seemed like the largest one actually turned away when he saw the camera. They were on a little island near the pond where I photographed the flamingos at Sea World. There wasn’t a sign close by; but, I believe they are brown pelicans.
According to Cornell Lab of Ornithology, brown pelicans are mostly brown and light gray. This pelican species was once near the brink of extinction due to pesticide pollution; but are fairly common today — an excellent example that species can recover.
