I spent months drooling over the  US map license plate wall art that has been showing up in decor magazines and even on television shows.  I thought it would go perfect in our grands’ travel themed room in our new home.

The problem was the cost.  The price for ones made from actual license plates was way too high and the tin ones still cost around $100.

I found a poster of the US license plate map online for only $5.99;  but, it just wasn’t quiet what I wanted.  I wanted a piece with texture and dimension like the ones I’d seen in magazines.

I decided to try adding my own texture and dimension.

First, I trimmed around the edges of the poster — leaving enough to trim again later.  Then, I glued the poster to the foam board.  I used spray glue because I thought it would be the way to keep it smooth.

Next, my hubby cut the foam board in the shape of the license plate map using an Exacto knife and his scroll saw.

Then, using a Sharpie, I colored the foam board edge black all the way around.  Next, I covered it with Mod Podge to add a little texture and to keep it sealed to the foam board.

You can add several coats of Mod Podge if you want more texture.  (Just make sure to let it dry in between coats.)

Finally, we built a base and frame from some old fence slats.  I painted the frame using white chalk paint.  After it dried, I waxed it with a clear wax and did some light sanding to give it a vintage look.

I spent $5.99 on the poster and $4.99 on the foam board.  All the other supplies I already had on hand.

With a little time and effort; we were able to make our own USA License Plate Wall Art.  And I love the way it looks.
